The Alpha of Virginia is one of 10 active chapters of the Sigma Phi Society, stretching nationally from Burlington, Vt. to Chapel Hill, N.C., and from the Hudson River to the Pacific Ocean. The second-oldest Greek-letter fraternal organization in the United States, and the oldest in continuous existence, the Sigma Phi Society has fueled the bonds of friendship among its brothers for nearly 200 years.
Our home for the last 60 years at 163 Rugby Road provides our brotherhood a residence, dining facility, and social hall. An architectural gem atop Carr’s Hill, the century-old structure provides commanding views of Madison Bowl to the east and the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west.
Leadership opportunities abound, both internally and in conjunction with the University community. In the tradition of student self-governance established by the University’s founder, Thomas Jefferson, Sigma Phi is a member of the U.Va. Inter-Fraternity Council (IFC), with the house president serving as the Society’s representative. The IFC promotes student safety and responsibility while leveraging the resources of its 27 member houses in community service projects, educational initiatives, and campus clean-up.
Both individually and as a group, brothers participate in intramural sports, philanthropy service projects, and a wide variety of clubs and organizations around Grounds. Social events include semi-annual professor dinners, which have welcomed dozens of U.Va. faculty to Sigma Phi Place over the years. Our kitchen and dining facility provide both a meal plan and the unmatched opportunity to commune over family-style dinner.
